Michigan State University Reports Canned Fruits and Vegetables to be THE BEST Option for Nutrition and Cost Savings!

Michigan State University and the Center for Economic Analysis conducted a study to compare consumer costs of fruits and vegetables and which packaging form (fresh, frozen or canned) delivered the most nutrition for the cost. The study found that:

  • Canned fruits and vegetables are superior option in terms of nutritional value relative to cost of serving
  • Canned peaches are a better value than fresh peaches, coming in at $0.08 less than fresh per-cup.
  • Canned fruits and vegetables provide favourable nutritional uptake at a lower consumer cost
  • The cost of fresh fruits and vegetables are often increased due to being imported from outside of the United States
  • Canned fruits and vegetables have a sustained shelf-life with no need for refrigeration/ energy consumption
  • Canned fruits and vegetables provide a nutritious intake with lower cost.
